YES TO COMPOSTABLE – BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

It means that the face mask and the wipe break down into compost within 60 days* – as fast as a grapefruit – thanks to the work of micro-organisms present into your home compost bin or the one of your town’s (each town has its own rules so go check them out!). You can then reuse this compost as a natural fertilizer : the loop is closed ;)

Of course, our face masks and wipes have been tested by independent organizations**. So you can compost peacefully!

*Optimal laboratory conditions.
**Conform to the OK Compost Home certification scheme from TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium (based on standard NFT51-800).

AND HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?

Thanks to the changes we initiated few months ago at Sephora Collection and the reformulation of our face masks and wipes without compromising efficiency ;)

Our face masks are formulated with 95% ingredients of natural origin and made with eucalyptus-derived fiber.

As for our wipes, they are formulated with 99% ingredients of natural origin and made with vegetal-derived fibers – which means no plastic!
These fibers from vegetal origin are derived from eucalyptus, pine tree and beech!

Q&A

COMPOSTABILITY

When a product is biodegradable, it means it will break down in an environment, under certain conditions of temperatures and humidity, but we don’t know the impact of this product on this environment.
A compostable product do break down in the same principle as a biodegradable product, but we’ve also checked the product is not harmful for the environment.
Biodegradability and compostability follow national and international standards. Respecting those norms is mandatory to be able to use these terms. As different standards exist, we have to specify according to which standard our products have been tested.

Composting is a waste treatment that allows for getting compost thanks to micro-organisms action, in specific conditions of temperature and time. When you put a face mask or a wipe into a compost bin, they naturally break down into compost, water and carbon dioxide thanks to the work of those micro-organisms. This compost then becomes a natural fertilizer that you can reuse! ☺

First, we made great improvements on our products without compromising efficiency!
Our face masks are formulated with 95% ingredients of natural origin and made with eucalyptus-derived fiber. As for our wipes, they are formulated with 99% ingredients of natural origin and with vegetal-derived fibers, which means no plastic!
Finally, you don’t create more waste as the face mask or the wipe naturally transform into a natural fertilizer that you can reuse afterwards! The loop is closed ☺
Do not leave your face masks or your wipes into toilets or in nature.

Packagings must reach specific requirements in order to preserve the quality and efficiency of our products; these are the main reasons that explain they can’t be compostable. But we improved them anyway:
- We removed the plastic protection sheet that helped unfold the face mask, which allowed us to save 20% plastic equivalent to 210 000 water bottles*!
- 65% of the plastic in the wipes’ packaging comes from sugar cane residuals! ☺

*unit sales between February 2019 and January 2020 (excluding China) x amount of plastic saved on each product by using the equivalence 1 ton of plastic = 30 000 water bottles of 1.5 liters.

It’s very simple! Put the product into your own home compost or the one of your town’s (each town has its own rules so go check them out!), so it can transform into compost thanks to the work of micro-organisms already present into the compost bin.

Yes, the amount of make up on a wipe is not significant and has no influence on the wipe’s compostability.

In order to collect compost and make a move for the planet, we recommend you to use a compost bin ☺ However, the face mask or the wipe will be treated as any other waste!

No, there’s only soil and not much compost into a flowerpot. The time for the face mask or the wipe to break down will be way too long. To compost the face mask or the wipe correctly, they should be placed into the good conditions. Throwing them into your garden won’t be enough!

COMPOST BIN

If you have a big garden, you can choose a compost bin that needs piles of dead leaves and branches.
If you live within an appartment, you can find compost bins that use earthworms: a little box with different levels that doesn’t create bad smell, where small eatrhworms live and will take care of your compost!
If you live in town, do not hesitate to ask your city hall in order to know if there are city compost bins around you!

Get 4 wooden pallets and assemble them with zip ties to form a square. Cover the sides with fine wire mesh using a stapler, in order to prevent overflows. Spread branches to reach a height of approximately 10cm, then layers of straw or dead leaves for the base of your compost. Finally, place a thick cardboard cover on top to protect the compost. That’s a wrap! You can now add your waste!

Often mix what’s inside.
Alternate between dry and damp waste. But be careful, it must be only organic waste from vegetal or animal origin: from your kitchen (peels (excluding some citrus fruits), coffee grounds, crushed egg shells…), from your garden (dead leaves, straw…), and of course your SEPHORA COLLECTION compostable face masks and wipes!
